MEXICAN TILE AND GROUT CLEANING DO'S AND DON'TS: NO VINEGAR AND WATER

MEXICAN TILE AND GROUT CLEANING DO'S AND DON'TS: NO VINEGAR AND WATER. SUN SENTINEL NEWS: Proper weekly maintenance is just as important as getting the right installer in order to extend the life of your Mexican Saltillo tile."I specify no Mop & Glo and no Endust, no Spic and Span," says Bob Corie, owner of Southern Seal Systems in Jupiter. "Would you put any of these things on your car? Don't use them on your tile.
White vinegar is a solution typically consisting of 4–7% acetic acid and 93–96% water, though types with higher acetic acid content are available for agricultural or cleaning purposes. "Another one of Bob Corie's pet peeves is the use of white vinegar and water, a technique often promoted by tile setters to customers to remove grout haze after a tile installation.
"I would like to have a dollar for everyone who tells me to use vinegar and water to clean Mexican or ceramic tiles," Bob Corie says. "The acid will eat right through the grout." The best place to find neutral cleaners and tile polish is the hardware or tile store, not the supermarket.
Here are some Mexican tile maintenance suggestions from Corie and Nick Valenti, president of the sealer manufacturer Ro-Val:
-- The floors should be swept often. The combination of sand and leather soles has the same effect as sandpaper. The floor will be more difficult to clean and keep clean.
-- Use a damp mop at least once a week. Your best tools are a 32-ounce cotton rag mop, a rolling mop bucket and a neutral cleaner that doesn't contain acid, nitrates or phosphates. Be sure to rinse well with clean water. https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1995-08-18-9508170287-story.html
